My Philosophy of Tech-enhancedTeaching

Hello students, parents and teachers! Below is a video that explains my beliefs about educating digital learners. I believe it is important to teach through technology as it can make learning much more engaging. As you can see in the video there are many ways to encourage collaborative and engaged learning through the use of technology. Curriculum Connection Math

The math game that I encourage grade 4 students to try out is Canoe Puppies. This math game is a canoe race that requires you to add two digit numbers in order to push your canoe forward and win the race. This will require students to think on the spot and add the two digit numbers together. This is a fun way to engage in math as you are racing to be the first canoe across the finish line

Since we work on the addition of two digit numbers in grade 4, this would be a great game to have students try at home. It covers the grade 4 mathematics curriculum expectation that explains, "by the end of grade 4, students will: add and subtract two-digit numbers, using a variety of mental strategies (e.g., one way to calculate 73-39 is to subtract 40 from 73 to get 33, and then add 1 back to get 34). This game would have students practicing these math strategies in their heads and give them practice working with two-digit numbers.

Curriculum Connection Social Studies

We have been learning about community and traditions in social studies in our grade two class. I have found a great game called the Big Show where students can learn about different cultures around the world. This is a game where students can explore different cultures around the world and take a quiz on their knowledge.

What is also great about this game is it matches up with the grade two social studies curriculum that states "by the end of grade 2, students will: demonstrate an understanding that the world is made up of countries, continents and regions and that people's lifestyles may differ from country to country." By having students play this game it is teaching children about the lifestyles of people all over the world making them have a larger understanding of the world.

Favourite Sites

The computer can be a useful tool to learn new strategies and activities you can use in the classroom. I love using Pinterest  to find new educational ideas. I especially like using this site to find art activities and interactive science experiments I can use in the classroom. 

Another site I use quite often is the Ontario Ministry of Education website. This is a great site that can be used to access curriculum documents and teacher resources. It also has tabs for parents and students as well! 

Lastly, Twitter  is a great website where you can share resources with people all over the world. I follow many educational tweeters where I can learn about new teaching ideas and strategies. Also, a great way to find resources and connect with other educators.

Student Resource Post

A great resource that grade two students might find useful is FunBrain! This is a website students can go to play educational games at home to keep up with the skills they are learning at school. Check out the math and reading sections!
